Job Title: Legal Assistant or Paralegal
Location: In-person at least once a week is strongly preferred. The role is hybrid, and the Firm is open to entirely remote candidates.
Job Summary: Under general direction, the Legal Assistant performs complex and specialized legal secretarial duties related to the specific work and function of the Firm. The Legal Assistant relieves the Attorney of clerical duties according to the Firms’ Standard Operating Procedures (“SOPs”). The position collaborates with internal clients, potential clients, and professional staff of other law firms on projects with varying levels of scope and complexity.
About the Firm: Tectonic Law was formed on June 1, 2023, and is currently a solo law practice. The Firm specializes in litigation related to trademark rights, copyright rights, and connected business claims. The Firm also registers and prosecutes trademark applications in the US. For select clients, the Firm also performs transactional legal services as general counsel in the areas of trademark and copyrights registration, IP licensing and management, corporate compliance, and corporate formation and planning. The Firm serves a variety of regulated industries including commercial cannabis, financial technology (including crypto and blockchain), and recycling.

Work Status: W-2 employee
Hours: Full-time, Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm Pacific Time (30-min lunch).
Pay & Benefits:
- $33.00 - 36.00 per hour (commensurate with experience and location).
- 40-hours of “front loaded” sick time upon commencement of employment, capped at 72 hours annually.
- Commencing after 90-day trial period, vacation time earned at the rate of 1 hour for each 40-hours worked, and capped at 80-hours annually.
- Commencing after 90-day trial period, $350.00 monthly stipend for personal healthcare coverage reimbursement.
- Commencing after 90-day trial period, $50.00 monthly stipend for use of personal phone and internet (for remote work).
- Observed and paid Firm holidays are New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. This role does not have a minimum requirement for billed hours.

Scope of Responsibility:

- Along with the Firm’s Client Services & Operations Coordinator, answering and routing incoming telephone calls to the Firm Monday through Friday during open hours.
Matter Calendaring:
- Calculating deadlines related to matters using LawToolBox and relevant rules under the supervision of an attorney, and managing/syncing the Firm’s calendars and calendaring software tools. Schedule and attend meetings related to meeting potential and existing clients, client matters and cases.
Legal Research, Writing and Case Management Tasks:
- Attend meetings related to management of the Firm and its matters.
- Check draft legal documents such as pleadings and contracts for “good document hygiene”, clarity, and spelling and grammar errors.
- Check draft legal documents for legal citation accuracy.
- Calendaring and legal case file management in Caret Legal (file and information organization, saving important communications to file, and understanding facts and legal issues in matters).
- Legal research into the local rules of procedure at relevant courts, or the California rules of court.
- Legal research into the agency rules for business entity filings in California and beyond.
- Creating shells and proofs of service.
- Filing and lodging legal documents.
- Conducting legal research.
- Preparing first drafts of trademark applications.
- Preparing first drafts of entity formation and compliance documents.
- Preparing first drafts of legal arguments. The Legal Assistant may perform other similar or related duties which may not be specifically included within this position description, but which are consistent with the general level of the job and the responsibilities described.
Working Environment/Minimum Physical Requirements: This role is primarily an in-office job (whether virtual or at-home). If present in San Francisco, physical requirements include standing, sitting, bending and lifting (up to approximately 15 lbs- office supplies). More than 80% of time is spent at a computer or device. Regardless of whether virtual or in-office, some travel required to nearest post office.
Equipment: The position requires access to viable internet (50-megabit speed minimum) and a phone with app capacity. The company will provide a mac laptop only for work use. Proof of internet speed and personal phone may be requested during the negotiation period.

Desired Characteristics:
- 3 - 5 years desired minimum experience in legal assistance or paralegal role. Certification or credentials are a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal skills.
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities independently.
- Demonstrated interest in any of the areas of: corporate law, business law, civil litigation, trademark law or copyright law.
